Mac The Travelling Knitter

Mac MacMillian, is a truly unique volunteer! While most of our volunteer knitters, sewers and quilters create their garments at home in front of the telly, Mac does quite the opposite.

Mac and his wife travel around NZ in their campervan and Mac knits along the way, sending parcels of knitting from all around NZ (and the world at times). In the last year alone, he’s sent knitting from Otahuhu, Wellsford, Cambridge, Wanganui, Rotorua and Fielding. Originally from Wanganui, Mac and his wife look after camping sites and small motels, while their owners are on holiday.

Mac told us, “When I started knitting for the Neonatal Unit at Wellington Regional Hospital back in 2012, I set a goal to knit 1,000 hat and booty sets!” Today we received a package from Mac, bringing his tally to 504 beanies and 509 booties! Congratulations Mac on reaching halfway to your goal!

Mac keeps a spreadsheet of all his knitting, recording what he’s made and where he made it. Here at Wellington Hospitals Foundation, we look forward to receiving parcels, like the one pictured above, from Mac and hearing about his latest adventures.

17th – 23rd June is National Volunteer Week! Thank you to all the Foundation’s 450 plus volunteers for the amazing work you do.
