Being in hospital can be tough. For older patients who need long-term care and rehabilitation, the challenges are even greater. Living in a clinical setting, away from loved ones and the familiar comforts of home, can often feel isolating and distressing. Relying on others for simple daily tasks can take a toll on a patient’s emotional and physical wellbeing, and they may start to feel helpless, lonely, or frustrated – which can make it harder to stay positive and focus on their recovery.
That’s why small gestures, like a fresh haircut or manicure, can make a world of difference, helping patients feel more like themselves. Even the simple act of physical touch during a haircut or manicure can provide much needed moments of comfort and connection.
Last week we were thrilled to welcome 20 students and tutors from the Premier Institute of Education – Hairdressing, to the Older Persons Rehabilitation Services ward at Hutt Hospital. This group generously offered their hairdressing, barbering, and manicure services to long-term patients, and in just two hours, 22 patients had received fresh new haircuts and 11 enjoyed manicures.
Some patients had been in the hospital for over three months, without the opportunity for a haircut, making their transformations truly heart-warming. Their fresh new cuts restored a sense of dignity and self-respect in an environment that can often feel clinical and impersonal.
The students also gained valuable hands-on experience and embraced the opportunity to connect with patients, and the buzz of them working in the ward lifted everyone’s spirits.
Our thanks to the Premier Institute for their kind support, as well as the staff who carefully coordinated the day’s activities based on each patient’s mobility needs.
