This photo is of a baby hoodie knitted by Margaret Lucas, a very long serving volunteer at Wellington hospital.
She made many many of these to sell in the Foundation Gifts & Gratitude Shop to raise funds for Wellington Hospitals Foundation.
Materials: 3 - 4 50g balls 4 ply merino
Needles: Size 3mm or (UK 11) needles & 3.25mm (UK 10) needles

Notes.
It is important to know the Right (RSF) & Wrong side of garment.
The Right side has a garter st row next to the cast on row.
The Wrong side row has a gap to the garter st row from the cast on. (See photo)
All garter stitch bands are 11 rows of garter st.
The length of garment to armhole shaping is 11 sets of pattern on back, fronts & sleeves.
The length of garment from armhole shaping to neck is 8 sets of pattern to cast off.
The hood length is 9 sets of pattern.
BACK
Using 3mm needles.
Cast on 85 sts.
Knit 11 rows in garter st.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Start pattern as below. This is now referred to as a 6 row set in the instructions.
Row 1.….(RSF) Knit
Row 2…..K1, P4 to end
Row 3…..K3, P2 to end
Row 4…..K3, P2 to end
Row 5…..K1, P4 to end
Row 6…..Knit
Complete these 6 rows 11 times, leaving the 6th row to be done on the last set of pattern.
Armhole shaping.
Cast off 3 sts each end of the next 2 rows.
Next row (RSF) P2, K2 tog tbl, pattern to last 3 sts, K1, P2.
Next row (WSF) K2, P2 tog, pattern to last 3 sts P1, K2
Repeat these 2 rows, decreasing at the beginning of each row, keeping the pattern correct for 8 pattern sets. (33 sts)
CAST OFF.

USING 3mm needles

Knit 11 rows in garter st.
Change to 3.25mm needles

Row 5…..(K1,P4) to last 8sts K8.
Row 6…..Knit.
Complete 11 patterns.
Armhole shaping.
Next row…..Cast off 3 sts pattern to last 8 sts, K8.
Next row. (WSF) K 8, pattern to the last 3 sts P1, K2.
Next row. (RSF) P2, K2 tog tbl, pattern to the last 8sts, K8.
Complete 6 more sets of the pattern on the band side of the front, continuing to Dec on the armhole edge repeating the above 2 rows. (28 sts)
Next knit Row 1 of set continuing armhole dec.
Then (WSF) Cast off 8 sts of the band then 4 sts more, pattern to end.

RIGHT FRONT
Using 3mm needles cast on 48 sts
Garter sts 5 rows
Buttonhole row…(RSF) K3, wool round needle twice, K2 tog, K3, cont in pattern to end.
Next row pattern to end, only knitting 1 st in double loop. This is to make a larger hole for jacket buttons.
Or
Buttonhole row. (RSF) K3, cast off 2 sts, K3, pattern to end
Next row pattern to last 3 sts, turn work, cast on 2 sts, turn work, K3.

Garter st 4 more rows. (11 rows garter st done)
NB …Work buttonholes every 9 ridges or 18 rows after the 2 buttonhole rows.
6 buttonholes in total to neck.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Start 6 row pattern set, keeping 8 border sts on correct side, repeat for 11 sets up to last row of last set.
Shape armhole.
(WSF). Cast off 3 sts on side edge, pattern to end.
Next row. (RSF) Pattern to last 3 sts, K1, P2.
Next row. (WSF) K2, P2 tog, pattern to end, keeping garter sts border.
Repeat these 2 rows till 6 sets of pattern done, including buttonholes.
27 sts remaining.
Neck shaping
Next row. (RSF) Cast off 8 sts over band & 4 sts more for neck, pattern to end.
Next 1….dec at armhole edge, pattern to end.
Next 2….Cast off 2 sts at neck edge, pattern to end.
Next 3.... dec at armhole, pattern to the end
Next 4.…cast off 2sts at neck edge, pattern to end.
Next 5….dec at armhole,pattern to end.
Next 6.…cast off 2 sts at neck edge, pattern to end.
Next 7.…dec at armhole, pattern to end

Knit 3 together, bind off.

SLEEVE (2)
Using 3mm needles.
Cast on 45 sts.
Knit 11 rows of garter st.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Knit 5 rows of pattern set then on the 6th row inc at each end of the row.
Continue knitting & increasing on the 6th pattern row till you have 57sts.
Knit without increases till 11 sets complete.
Armhole.
Cast off 3 sts each end of next 2 rows.
Next Dec at start of every row as follows
(RSF) P2, K2 tog tbl, pattern to last 3 sts, K1, P2.
(WSF) K2, P2 tog, pattern to last 3 sts, P1, K2.
Continue repeating these 2 rows till 9 sts left, finish set without any more decs
(8 sets)
Cast off.
HOOD
USING 3mm needles.
Cast on 85 sts.
Garter st for 11rows.
Change to 3.25mm needles.
Starting on row 1 of pattern as for Back, complete 9 sets of pattern in total.
Approx 13cm long from start.
Cast off 12 sts at the start of the next 4 rows.
Cast off remaining sts.
