This is a variation of the HELLO BABY CARDIGAN

 

It gives a basic pattern to follow for size, which you can add any decorative stitches, or knit up part balls to make your own design!

The fronts & backs are knitted up together to the armhole, then split into backs & fronts to finish. 

The bands are knitted as you go.

 

To give a neat edge always slip the first stitch knit wise and knit the last stitch of the row, this is not always written in the instructions.

 

Size: Newborn 

Materials: 2 x balls of 4 ply Merino or 100% wool

Needles: 3.25mm 

Button: 1

Abbreviations:

Ktbs - Knit through back of st

Kfb - knit into front and back of st to inc

Yrn - yarn round needle

Psso - pass slip st over

RSF - Right side facing

 WSF - wrong side facing

 

BODY

Cast on 124 sts using size 3.25mm needles

Row 1: Knit (ktbs of the first row.) This is the right side

This will stop the garment rolling up

Knit 13 rows more in garter st. This is 14 rows in total

 

PATTERN 

On fronts & back

Right side facing

Row 1…Knit

Row 2…K8, Purl to last 8 sts, K8

Row 3…Knit 8, (P3, K3 ) till the last 8 sts, K8

Row 4…K8, Purl to last 8 sts, K8

Row 5…Knit

Row 6…K8, Purl to last 8 sts, K8

Row 7…K8, (K3, P3 ) till the last 8 sts, K8

Row 8…K8, Purl

 

NB….If you are knitting stocking st or decorative pattern don’t forget to keep first & last 8 sts in garter st for the bands.

 

Repeat pattern from Row 1, to Row 8 till length is 12cm

Or knit in your own decorative pattern till length is 12cm

 

Buttonhole row: 

Knit 3, yrn twice, ( to make larger buttonhole) or do a 2 st cast off buttonhole ( google U tube) k2 tog, k3, cont across row in pattern

 

Continue knitting in pattern till 13cm long

 

Separation of fronts and backs right side facing

 

RIGHT FRONT

Row 1.   Knit 8sts, slip 1, k1, psso, K23. Don’t break yarn

This is the first Dec row for the v neck shaping on the right front, put these sts onto a holding thread or large safety pin.

This is the RIGHT FRONT

 

Continue knitting from left hand needle

Knitting tog first 2 sts and last 2 sts of the next 58 sts to leave 56 sts

This is the BACK

 

Place the last 33 sts onto safety pin or holding thread 

This is the LEFT FRONT

 

BACK

Continue knitting on the back 56 sts till work measures 24 cm from cast on row

RSF….Shape shoulders

 

Cast off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows

Then cast off 7 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows

Cast off loosely the remaining 18 sts

 

RIGHT FRONT contd.

Rejoin yarn at armhole edge

Keeping pattern correct continue to Dec 1 st (slip 1, k1, psso) at front edge inside garter st band on every 4th row, until 27 st remain

Work straight in pattern till front measures 24 cm

 

SHAPE SHOULDER

On armhole edge cast off 6 sts at beginning of row, pattern to end

Next row. Cast off 6 sts at beginning of row, pattern to end

Next row. Pattern row

Next row. Cast off 7 sts, this leaves 8 sts

Continue in garter sts on remaining 8 sts until band fits halfway across back neck (approx 15 rows)

Cast off 8 sts

 

LEFT FRONT

Transfer 33 sts to needle, rejoin yarn at armhole edge

Row 1. Pattern till last 10st, K2 tog, K8

Keeping pattern correct Dec 1st ( knit 2 tog) before band on every 4th row, until 27 st remain

Work straight in pattern till front measures 24 cm

Shape shoulder as for right front

 

SLEEVES. Work 2.

 

Using 3.25 needles

Cast on 37 sts and knit 12 rows garter St

 

Continuing in pattern used on fronts & back

1st row.  Kfb of first & last stitch on this row and following 4th row till 57 sts

Continue to knit in pattern used for main body of cardigan till sleeve measures 14cm

Cast off loosely. Cast off using bigger needles if you are a tight knitter

 

Sew garter neck band together & shoulder seams

Sew in sleeves & sew up sleeve seams

Sew on button!
