First introduced to Wellington in 2009 by the Rotary Club of Wellington and held annually ever since, Jumbo Tennis is a fun, quick-fire, team event, played with oversized racquets. Played to the same rules as Table Tennis (players take alternate hits), Jumbo Tennis 7s has captured the attention of the corporate world for its entertainment, hospitality, camaraderie and support for local charities.
“Our goal is to raise $30,000 and have a heap of fun while we’re doing it” says William Sommerville, the man behind the idea. The Rotary Club of Wellington donates the funds raised at each event to charity. Events held between 2011 and 2017 have raised between $20,000 and $30,000 each. Wellington Children’s Hospital was on of the beneficiaries in 2017 and we are delighted to be supported again in the upcoming 2018 tournament.
40 four person teams play for the Jumbo Tennis 7s Cup and many other prizes in a seven minute game round robin competition. Best tennis, best dressed and best supporters are just some of the prizes on offer. Recovery periods are plentiful and players can take full advantage of the complimentary court-side food and beverages.
The next Jumbo Tennis tournament is being held on the 1st of March 2019. For further information and bookings, click here.
