Carol joined our volunteer whānau in February this year. Born and raised in Chicago she moved to NZ in her 20s and has an IT background, having spent many years working for IBM, and is now enjoying her retirement.

While initially volunteering as a Guide in the hospital’s Transit Lounge, she has now totally found her niche in Te Wao Nui children’s hospital. Each week Carol can be found sterilising toys, helping the Play Specialist and Health Care Assistants, and more recently distributing donor funded new pyjamas to children in need.

Carol explained that she chose to donate her time to the hospital because she wanted to make a difference. “I was thinking of the nurses and how I could possibly make their job a little easier. I thought that if there was something I could do to help then they would have more time to spend with the patients. I love this role and seeing the big smiles when children receive a lovely pair of PJs. Te Wao Nui is lovely! It’s extraordinary how large the rooms are and it’s an absolute pleasure to volunteer here!”

Thank you Carol, and to all of our dedicated volunteers. We are so fortunate to have a team of more than 400 volunteers, who generously choose to gift their time and talents to help our hospitals in many different ways each week. We couldn’t do it without you! If you are interested in becoming a hospital volunteer please visit HERE.
