Meet Jonathan Tham, a dedicated Emergency Department (ED) volunteer and university student studying Accounting and Statistics. Jonathan joined the volunteer service over a year ago and has found a meaningful way to contribute in the fast-paced, unpredictable and emotionally charged ED environment.

“Emergency Departments can be daunting,” Jonathan says. “For patients and their families, it’s often a place of uncertainty. Sometimes all it takes is a warm blanket, a cup of tea, a snack – or just someone to sit and talk to – to make the experience a little less stressful.”

Jonathan’s role may seem small in the wider picture of a busy ED, but he understands the power of simple gestures. “Even the smallest thing can make a big difference. It’s about being there and showing care in the moments that matter.”

Through his volunteering, Jonathan told us that has grown in confidence and empathy and has gained a deeper understanding of the vital role teamwork plays in delivering patient care. “I’ve learned a lot about working alongside hospital staff and adapting to meet patient needs. It motivates me to go the extra mile, to be that bridge between visitors and staff and to make sure people feel seen and supported.”

He especially values the quiet moments of human connection. “I enjoy getting to know people, being that listening ear when someone wants to talk. Gratitude and empathy really do go a long way.”

Jonathan is one of over 30 volunteers who regularly support the Emergency Department, including two Pet Therapy volunteers and their dogs, who bring extra comfort to both patients and staff.

When asked what advice he’d give to someone considering volunteering, Jonathan says:  “Bring your own flair. Be willing to adapt, work as a team and show empathy. Even one small act of kindness can make a meaningful impact.”

Dr Mark Hussey, Clinical Leader, says volunteers play an essential role in the Emergency Department. “The Wellington Hospitals Foundation volunteers are a valued and integral part of Te Pae Tiaki | Wellington ED. From offering a friendly, non-clinical ear to patients and families, to countless cups of tea and hospitality support – they make a huge difference. They even help keep our staff break areas in order (we’re a messy bunch!), bring in therapy dogs, and so much more. We truly couldn’t do without them – thank you from all the ED team.”
