For National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the incredible individuals who bring warmth, compassion and practical support to our hospitals – like Kate Francis. Kate has generously shared her time across several volunteer roles, from guiding patients through the hospital to helping out at the Mental Health, Addiction & Intellectual Disability Services (MHAIDS) Op Shop. Her genuine love of helping others is at the heart of everything she does.

Kate’s background is as varied as it is caring. Throughout her life she’s worked in roles that centre on supporting others. Outside of volunteering, Kate also enjoys acting and singing, creative outlets that add joy to her life and help her connect with others.

It was while visiting the hospital that Kate noticed the volunteers and thought, “That’s something I could do.” With her friendly nature and strong communication skills, becoming a hospital guide was a perfect fit.

“As a guide, I can reduce patients’ and visitors’ stress and anxiety, especially when they’re running late or are new to the hospital,” Kate says. “I know I bring a calm, approachable presence and that makes people feel more at ease.”

Kate also volunteers in the MHAIDS Op Shop, supporting people receiving inpatient mental health care. She helps maintain the clothing and toiletries in the shop, providing comfort and dignity to patients in a practical way. “It might seem small,” she says, “but having access to clean clothes or a warm jacket can really boost someone’s confidence and well-being.”

For Kate, volunteering has brought personal rewards too. “It gives me a sense of purpose and satisfaction knowing I’ve made someone’s day just a little better. The social connection has been a real boost for my own well-being as well.”

One moment stands out especially in her memory: “I was working in ICU reception when a young boy kept coming to the window. To ease the pressure on his family and brighten his day, I gave him a toy firetruck. His face just lit up, and his family’s did too. It was a small gesture, but one that really made a difference.”

Her advice to others thinking about volunteering? “Explore the different roles and choose the one that speaks to you. If you feel passionate about it, you’re more likely to enjoy it and make a real impact.”

Thank you, Kate, for the kindness, energy and heart you bring to our hospital whānau. You truly help make our hospitals a more welcoming and supportive place for all.

If you’d like to Volunteer with us we’d love to hear from you.
