This National Volunteers Week, we’re excited to recognise and celebrate a few of our over 600 volunteers who make people’s healthcare experiences brighter and easier year-round.

Meet Susan!

Susan has loved creating things since she was small, first picking up embroidery at eight years old. Today she volunteers her skills and passion to the Foundation as a member of the Wellington Embroiderers Guild, lovingly crafting handmade felt teddies to support families experiencing the loss of a baby.

Included in care packs, these special keepsakes provide families with a tangible reminder of their precious little one. Knowing the teddies may become part of a family's lasting memories is what drives Susan's volunteer work.

"I felt that my stitching could contribute to this need, and I endeavour to make my teddies smile. You feel better when you receive a smile," says Susan.

Every teddy is unique and reflects the style and creativity of the volunteer who made it. For Susan, volunteering has inspired her to keep learning and refining her craft. The intricate bullion knot flower, a stitch she was determined to master has now become her signature touch on the teddies she lovingly creates.

Susan's commitment even travels with her! Her small red container of stitching supplies is one of the first things she packs when she goes away, ensuring she can continue creating teddies wherever she is.

Together, the Guild creates an incredible 100 teddies each year, a huge thank you to Susan and her fellow volunteers for providing small comforts that make a big difference to families in our region.
