This National Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who bring care, calm and connection to some of the busiest and most high-pressure areas of our hospitals.

In the Emergency Departments at Wellington Regional Hospital and Hutt Hospital, over 100 volunteers play an essential role in supporting patients and whānau during moments that can be stressful, frightening, and often unexpected.

With over 114,000 patients cared for last year alone, even the smallest gesture of kindness can make a meaningful difference. A warm drink, a blanket, or a few minutes of conversation can help ease anxiety and bring comfort when it is needed most.

For many volunteers, the role is deeply personal and offers purpose, perspective, and connection in return.

“I volunteer because it feeds my soul. It reminds me to slow down, be present and appreciate what I have. It brings a sense of purpose, fulfilment, and gratitude into my life – it’s not about just helping others but appreciating what really matters.

Others are drawn to the simple power of kindness in difficult moments.

“Bringing sunshine into a drab day, a cheery smile and a kind word to say, offers some comfort and solace to those in times of stress.”

Mandy, Hutt Hospital ED volunteer

At Wellington Regional Hospital, volunteers speak about the impact of small but meaningful interactions in a fast-moving environment.

“As amazing as the staff are at Wellington Regional Hospital, a trip to ED is hardly a stay at the Four Seasons! So it’s incredible what a cup of tea, a bit of laughter and some company can do to lift your spirits in stressful and often painful situations. I enjoy chatting with patients from all walks of life and doing my best to make their stay more comfortable.”

“I joined because I wanted an opportunity to see and experience how our health system functions and how I can help. Since being an ED volunteer I have learned so much - seeing what goes on behind those doors, how hard they work, and how the little things we volunteers do can add so much to the patient experience.”

Together, these volunteers help transform moments of uncertainty into moments of care

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our Emergency Department volunteers across Hutt and Wellington Hospitals. We’re so grateful for the compassion, calm, and humanity you bring to every shift.
