Whether it’s a surgeon reaching for cutting edge technology, a baby fighting for life in intensive care, or a woman you love receiving a breast biopsy - we’re here for our hospitals, so they can be there for you.

While government funding provides the essentials, your donation helps equip our hospitals with cutting edge technology and equipment that helps diagnose, treat and save lives every single day.

Here’s a few key examples of how your support helps.

Baby's foot in NICU incubator
Giving our precious newborn babies the best possible start in life

For any family, coming up against complications when a baby is born prematurely can be an incredibly challenging and scary time. Every year thousands of babies in Aotearoa are born prematurely, and Wellington’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides a critical role. Since 2007 support from our community has enabled us to provide more than $4million in funding towards NICU. This includes supporting a wide range of life changing medical equipment and technology such as Neonatal Air Transport Incubators – a lifeline for emergency situations assisting families across the central region as far as Gisborne and Taranaki in the north, to Nelson and Marlborough in the south. We’ve funded life saving incubators, critical cooling machines, cerebral monitors, a first-of-it’s kind milk bank, and various other things to help give our previous newborn babies a fighting chance.

Cutting-edge radiology equipment to help with detection and diagnosis

Radiology is one example of an area where advancements in technology can be game-changing in helping to improve health outcomes for people of all ages in our community. Thanks to support from our community we’ve been able to fund things like the state-of-the-art 3D Mammogram Machine which helps to detect abnormalities that can cause breast cancer -the third most common cause of cancer in Aotearoa.

Support from our community helped to fund a brand new MRI machine, which plays a critical role in helping to diagnose injuries and diseases, the planning of treatments, and evaluating the effectiveness of those treatments. We’ve been able to fund things like mobile X-ray machines for the child health service, and various portable ultrasound machines for places like the blood and cancer unit and renal service.

Operating theatre
Specialist equipment for operating theatres and surgery.

Every year our public hospitals perform thousands of surgeries for people from the wider Wellington region and beyond. In those critical moments, specialist equipment plays a vital role. Thanks to support we’ve been able to fund things like laparoscopes for minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat conditions in the abdomen and pelvis through small incisions. It is a thin tube with a camera and light that transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing surgeons to see inside the body without a large incision. This "keyhole surgery" leads to benefits like less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times. Support from our community has also helped to fund things like laryngoscopes, gastroscopes, and colonvideoscopes. As we look to the future, we’ll also hope to be able to fund things like state of the art Robotic surgery equipment.
