Radiology technician adjust a new 3D mammogram machine.

Thanks to donors, patients across our region now have access to the most advanced breast imaging and diagnostic tools available.

In late 2023, donor generosity funded the purchase of a state of the art 3D digital mammography machine, delivering major improvements in imaging clarity, patient comfort and stress reduction. This leading edge technology produces highly detailed images in 1mm slices, significantly improving the detection of abnormalities, even in dense breast tissue.

The new machine also supports Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM), a breakthrough imaging process that involves a contrast dye to help determine whether an abnormality is likely benign or malignant. This means fewer patients needing stressful, expensive MRIs or unnecessary biopsies.

Contrast enhanced mammography is a relatively new technology for New Zealand. With this machine, we’ll soon be the only site in the country able to offer contrast-enhanced biopsies as well - a game-changer for our service and for patients.  -Tim McElroy, Radiology Manager

But that’s only part of the story.

Thanks again to our community's generosity, additional equipment was also purchased to fully integrate the hospital’s Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy (VAB) and Vacuum-Assisted Excision (VAE) capabilities with the new system. These minimally invasive procedures provide faster, safer diagnostic options for many patients, often replacing the need for more invasive surgery.

Better for Patients. Better for Staff.

With a fully renovated mammography suite and ergonomic machine design, patients now experience a calmer, more comfortable environment and staff are better supported in their work.

Our team is genuinely excited every time we use this machine. It’s raised the standard of care for every patient we see, and we’re deeply grateful to the Foundation’s donors who made this possible.” - Dr Sarah Sparks, Subspecialist Breast Radiologist and Jasmine Redman & Stephanie Lammas, Co-Unit Charge Mammography

Why This Matters

Breast cancer is the third most common cancer in Aotearoa, claiming more than 600 lives every year. Most patients who come to Wellington Regional Hospital for diagnostic imaging are at a vulnerable point, either awaiting a diagnosis, navigating ongoing treatment or returning after previous battles with cancer.

Thanks to your support, Wellington Hospital’s breast imaging service is now equipped to offer faster, clearer and more compassionate care;  giving patients the best chance of early diagnosis and the best chance of recovery.
