Raewyn at the piano.

Whether it’s the gentle sound of our baby grand piano echoing through the atrium, or the soft strains of harp and glockenspiel, our volunteer musicians create moments of calm, connection and comfort for patients, whānau, visitors and staff.

Backed by research showing music’s powerful therapeutic benefits, our team of 32 talented volunteers helps transform the hospital environment into a more welcoming and soothing space.

Why it matters

Music softens the clinical edge of hospital life, reduces anxiety and brings brief moments of joy, reflection or relief when people need them most.

Meet Raewyn

Raewyn began volunteering nearly five years ago, following the loss of both her parents - her mother to a long battle with Parkinson’s and her father the year prior.

This was my way of giving back to the health system that had cared for my family.

Raewyn is frequently moved by those who pause to listen

People wave, clap, sketch me while I play, or record videos to send to loved ones overseas. Those moments are humbling and incredibly rewarding.

We welcome instrumentalists and vocalists of all kinds to help create a more compassionate hospital experience.

Volunteer pianists should hold a Grade 8 (or equivalent) qualification.
