Our region’s hospitals provide critical, round-the-clock care for thousands of people, every single day. Thanks to you, they can do more for every patient who walks through their doors.

Founded in 2005 by Bill Day MNZM, for 20 years Wellington Hospitals Foundation has proudly supported our region’s public hospitals as the official charity partner of Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley.

What makes us different?

Healthcare would still be funded if we didn’t exist, but it wouldn’t be the same.

While the government funds the basics, Wellington Hospitals Foundation exists to ensure that hospitals across the region have the additional tools, spaces and support they need to deliver exceptional care to patients of all ages.

Whether it’s a surgeon reaching for cutting edge technology, a baby fighting for life in intensive care, or a family comforted by the kindness of a volunteer or warm and inviting hospital space - we’re here for our hospitals, so they can be there for you.

We are a nimble, responsive charity, working hand-in-hand with frontline staff to address immediate needs that help strengthen and build a more resilient health system for our community.

Who do we support?

As well as caring for people across the Wellington Region, our hospitals support patients from many other parts of Aotearoa - from Gisborne and Taranaki in the north, to Nelson and Marlborough in the south; and everywhere in between.

Wellington’s hospitals are also an important part of the National Specialist Services Network, providing highly specialised care for patients from across the country. For example, the Hutt Hospital Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Service treated burns victims from the Whakaari / White Island eruption in 2019.

Together our hospitals and health services include:

  • Wellington Regional Hospital
  • Kenepuru Hospital
  • Hutt Hospital
  • Te Wao Nui Child Health Service
  • Kapiti Health Centre
  • Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Services (MHAIDS)

Since 2005, we’ve secured over $160 million in community funded support to help transform hospital care.

Thanks to generous community donors and partners, we’ve delivered major projects including:

  • Te Wao Nui Children’s Hospital, built with the help of major benefactors Mark Dunajtschik and Dorothy Spotswood, alongside $10 million in community fundraising to outfit and equip the purpose built hospital.
  • State of the art diagnostic and surgical equipment, such as a new MRI Scanner and 3D Mammogram machine, helping medical teams provide faster and more accurate care.

But our impact reaches far beyond large scale projects. We’ve funded hundreds of smaller, but deeply meaningful initiatives, from family comfort rooms and therapeutic art installations, to inkless stamp kits for grieving parents, fans that help palliative patients breathe more easily and toys that comfort children during difficult procedures.

We also invest in specialist medical training and education, ensuring hospital teams have access to the latest knowledge and skills to deliver world class care.
