Even when you're unwell, hospital stays can feel long and boring, especially for kids. At Te Wao Nui Children's Hospital our carefully selected volunteers provide a warm, welcoming presence in clinical spaces, offering comfort, conversation and practical support to patients, their whānau and staff.
Whether it's building Lego with children to give Mum or Dad a break, restocking pyjamas, washing toys, or simply providing a kind word - our volunteers help make hospital stays feel a little less daunting. They also offer crucial support to busy hospital staff, giving them the extra help they need to focus on patient care.
Why it matters
Volunteers play a key role in brightening the hospital environment, making children and their families feel supported and less anxious. Their presence brings a sense of normalcy to what can be a challenging time, offering both emotional and practical assistance to enhance the hospital experience.
Meet Carol
Originally from Chicago, Carol moved to New Zealand in her 20s and spent many years working for IBM in IT before retiring. While she initially volunteered as a guide in the hospital’s Transit Lounge, she found her niche in Te Wao Nui Children's Hospital helping the busy Play Specialist and Health Care Assistants.
Carol chose to volunteer because she wanted to make a difference:
I was thinking of the nurses and how I could help make their job a little easier. If I could do something to assist, they would have more time to spend with the patients. I love this role and seeing the big smiles when children receive a lovely pair of PJs. Te Wao Nui is such a lovely place! The rooms are so spacious, and it’s an absolute pleasure to volunteer here.
