It was a privilege to attend the blessing of Rongo te Wairua (feel the spirit, sense the soul), a new mural and alcove created for patients at Te Whare Ra Uta, the Mental Health Service for Older Persons (MHSOP) at Kenepuru Hospital.

With support from the Foundation, a once plain, unused alcove has been transformed into a space of comfort, respite and quiet within a busy clinical ward. The project was a true collaborative effort, with Nicky Campbell, Arts Therapist, Health NZ CCHV working alongside patients to bring the original artwork to life, creating a space that now also reflects connection and creativity.

Featuring Mana Island in the Ngāti Toa region, the mural holds deep significance. During the blessing, we were privileged to hear the stories behind the artwork, its connection to attendees, and the collaborative process that brought it to life, before sharing kai and refreshments together.
We know this special space will bring comfort and moments of peace for patients and whānau for years to come. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.
