James, a young adult and cancer sufferer, at the beach on a summer's day with his black lab.

Every year, around 200 young New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For those in the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) age group, receiving a life-changing diagnosis while navigating early adulthood can be especially isolating and overwhelming.

James, a fit and healthy 23 year old builder and personal trainer, was shocked to learn he had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. What followed was a gruelling journey with multiple rounds of chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, radiation and a cutting-edge drug trial - all made even tougher by the challenges of a global pandemic.

Throughout it all, James faced each setback with humour, resilience and grit. His story reminds us why compassionate, age appropriate support matters.

From specialist AYA cancer nurses and wraparound services to access to emerging treatments, every element of care counts.

With your generous support, Wellington Hospitals Foundation is proud to fund Patient Record Books for everyone receiving treatment through the Wellington based Radiation, Oncology and Haematology services. These books help patients like James keep track of the overwhelming number of appointments, tests and specialists they encounter.

Thanks to our caring community, we also fund tailored care packs designed especially for young adults. While a small gesture, these packs offer a moment of comfort during long hospital stays, reminding patients that even though our donors may not know them personally, they care deeply.
